What do I think about the media in the Martin-Luther-Schule in Marburg
Last week, our course went to the Martin-Luther-Schule to get an impression of their media equipment. The school has around 1300 students with around 30 students in each class. We visited the teachers room with just 2 computers in it. The teachers use them to rent media equipment they need for their classes. Using them, they can also have an overview which hardware is in when in use and when classes write tests. I think that this is a good tool and a good way to cordinate the equipment the school has. But I am not sure if these 2 computers in this rooms are really enough for all the teachers of the school. There was also a cupboard with beamers, computers and other things the teachers can use. The only monitor, supposed to show the substitution shedule, was pretty small and did not work when wwe were there.
The entire school has just 3 copy machines, which is not enough. The teacher told us that there is always a long line when one of the machines is broken. I really think that this school has to find the money to buy some more copy machines. They are essential for the teachers preparation and waiting for a long time to make some copies takes away important time teachers normally do not have. The amount of 2500 copies for each semester is also not enough for most of the teachers. They can share their cards if one does not need all of the copies, but in my opionan unlimited - or at least very big - amount of copies for teachers is something that each school should be able to guarantee.
The Martin-Luther-Schule has one desk with 14 laptops which is supposed to be enough for the entire school. The teachers have to rent it in advance and then think about how they could bring it to a classroom in the third floor, because the cupboard containing them is hardly to leave the second floor. The fact that some teachers forget to charge the laptops after their class used them is also another obstacle in the media usage of this school.
The school has just 2 smartboards which is, compared to other schools, not enough. Teachers are not able to rent the rooms which they are in so that it is a kind of luck to be able to use them apropriatly within a class.
The 2 computer rooms of the school have a very good equipment. The teacher is able to use "Master Eye" in order to control and observe what the students do on their computers. Both rooms are connected and can be used as one. But the amount of computers is small and compared to the size of the classes not enough. 2 stundent have to use one computer. I like the fact that this school has these 2 rooms, but it wpuld need more computers. It would be great to have one computer for each student so that they could work on projects on their own.
